What is Bromo Crater?

Bromo Crater, officially known as Mount Bromo, is one of Indonesia's most iconic and active volcanoes, part of the Tengger massif. With a height of 2,329 meters above sea level, it sits in the middle of a vast plain called the "Sea of Sand" (Segara Wedi), a protected nature reserve within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java. Despite its active status, it is incredibly popular to visit due to its stunning beauty and uniquely alien landscape. The sheer size of the crater, the surreal vistas surrounding it, and the mystical qualities it exudes, make it a highlight for anyone exploring the region.

Incidentally, though many visitors base themselves in Bali to explore Indonesia's wonders, Bromo Crater itself is not located on the island of Bali. It's located about a flight away, on the neighboring island of Java. This means that visiting the crater typically involves a bit of a journey, including a flight or ferry trip followed by a drive and a short hike or horseback ride to the rim of the crater itself.

History of Bromo Crater

The history of Mount Bromo is deeply entwined with the indigenous Tenggerese people who inhabit the area around the Bromo–Tengger–Semeru National Park. The name 'Bromo' is derived from 'Brahma', one of the Hindu gods which is reflective of the Hindu influence on this region of Java. The Tenggerese are descendants of the Majapahit empire and have preserved their traditions and rituals for centuries. The most famous of these is the annual Yadnya Kasada festival, where locals make offerings to the gods by throwing crops, vegetables, and even livestock into the volcano's crater.

Mount Bromo has erupted multiple times throughout history, with notable eruptions occurring in 2004, 2010, 2011, and as recently as 2019. These eruptions have both shaped the land and impacted local traditions, adding layers of new ash to the 'Sea of Sand' and reinforcing the Tenggerese belief in the sacredness of the mountain.

Things to Do & See at Bromo Crater

Visiting Bromo Crater is all about the experiences that surround the landscape and culture. Most visitors aim to catch a sunrise over the crater, a magical experience where the changing light transforms the scenery into an array of stunning colors. To watch the sunrise, though, you'll need to wake up early and trek to a viewpoint, with Mount Penanjakan being the most famed spot for panoramic views of the eruption silhouetted against the dawn sky.

Beyond sunrise, you can make your way to the crater itself. The hike to the rim can be done on foot or, for a more local experience, on horseback accompanied by Tenggerese guides. Once at the rim, the view inside the active crater, with its rising smoke and the occasional rumble of the volcano, is spectacular.

For the adventurous, there's the option to trek to Mount Semeru, the highest peak in Java, which towers above the landscape near Bromo. If you're lucky during your visit, you might also be able to participate in or witness the annual Kasada festival, adding a rich cultural layer to your experience.
